3 Ways To Reduce Air Pollution Indoors

Many of us are so focused on global environmental issues, we forget that pollution can find its way into our own homes. In this post, we're going to cover what air pollution is, and three ways for you to reduce air pollution in your home.

What Is Air Pollution?

Simply put, air pollution is made up of hazardous gases that are both man-made and naturally produced. Here are a few examples:

  • Vehicle emissions
  • Power plant fumes
  • Pesticides
  • Carbon dioxide
  • Carbon monoxide
  • VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds)

1) Know Your Area

First, it's important to know what the risk factors in your area are. While you might not live right next to a large factory or power plant, knowing how air pollution tends to travel and build-up is an important part of keeping your home safe. Air quality is graded on an index, from hazardous to good quality. To learn more about what pollutants are common in your area, or the local AQI, visit the official air quality map here.

2) Replace/Clean Air Filters and Vents Regularly

Porous materials trap things in your home every day. Dust, dander, dirt, insects, and even pollutants travel by air! This is even more likely when it comes to the materials in your home that are meant to filter the air. While you should regularly clean your filters and replace them when necessary, it is especially important to make sure the filters aren't trapping any toxic fumes or air pollutants in your home.

3) Professionally Clean/Replace Carpeting

For the same reason, other fabrics should also be regularly cleaned. This could include curtains and bedspreads, but areas of high traffic are most important. Rugs, mats, and carpets should be professionally deep-cleaned or replaced if they have been exposed to harmful air pollutants, as they are the most likely candidate to trap pollutants in your home.
