Are you dealing with
mold or mildew growth on your property? You’ve likely heard the words mold and mildew used interchangeably, but there are some key differences in the two. If you’re unsure what you’re facing, you can’t be expected to properly address the problem. The experts and BioClean have fought all types of mold and mildew for decades, and we can help you eradicate your mold or mildew problem.
Mold Vs. Mildew
Mold and mildew are both types of fungi. Mold is usually black or green, while mildew is often gray or white. Both mold and mildew can appear on damp surfaces, such as
bathroom or
basement walls, but mold can also grow on food products. Mold grows in the form of multicellular filaments or hyphae, while mildew has a flat growth. Mildew is often referred to as a kind of mold and lumped into the all-encompassing term “mold”.
A Difference In Appearances
Mold has a fuzzy appearance and comes in a number of different colors, such as orange, green,
black, brown,
pink or even purple. Downy mildew starts as yellow spots that become brighter, then change to brown. Powdery mildew is whitish in color then its spots change to yellowish brown and finally black. Any and all of these colors are concerning for your health and the safety of your property, and should be addressed in a timely manner.
Biological Differences Between Mold and Mildew
Mold obtains its energy from food and other organic matter. Reproduction is sexual or asexual via spores. These spores are airborne and can survive in extreme conditions. Mold also has a musty smell and is only visible to the naked eye when colonies start to grow. Mildew, on the other hand, is found on a variety of host plants such as beans, maize, potatoes, tomatoes and rice. It can also grow on clothing, leather, paper, shower curtains, and window sills where moisture content is high. Reproduction is also via the production of spores, both sexually and asexually.
Health Effects of Mold and Mildew
The presence of both mold and mildew can have a negative effect on the health of those in the immediate area, especially after long-term exposure. Some ways that mold and mildew can impact health include:
