How Does Mold Remediation Work?

If you have mold damage in your home, you might have heard of mold remediation. But how is it different from mold removal? Why is it important? And what does the process entail? Here's how mold remediation works.

What Are the Steps of the Mold Remediation Process?

The mold remediation process is designed to completely eradicate mold so it can't regrow. Here are the steps your mold remediation professional will follow:

  • Containment. The moldy area is isolated, so the mold can't spread. Nearby furniture is moved and other surfaces are covered with plastic or tarps.
  • Removal.  Mold is carefully removed with a HEPA or wet/dry vacuum.
  • Cleaning. Once most of the mold is gone, the mold remediation professional will clean the residual mold with cleaning agents. The cleaners will disinfect and kill any remaining spores.
  • Sanitization. The entire area is sanitized with high-temperature air to kill off any remaining traces of mold. The removal, cleaning, and sanitization steps together ensure that no leftover mold spores remain. This way, the mold will not regrow.
  • Restoration. Once the mold is gone, the affected surfaces can be rebuilt. For example, a moldy floor can be re-carpeted and moldy walls can be rebuilt and repainted. As a final step, the mold remediator will inspect the area to make sure everything is back to the way it was before the mold damage occurred.

When Should I Hire a Professional?

Mold should be handled as soon as possible.

  1. First, any water damage should be fixed so the mold growth stops. A mold remediation professional can help you find the cause.
  2. Then, they can start the process of mold remediation.
  3. After going through the steps of the mold remediation process, you can be sure your mold problem is gone for good.
