How to Remove Mold Stains From Home Surfaces

Although the stains left behind by mold aren't themselves harmful, if left untreated, mold stains can permanently discolor paint, wall coverings, grout, and wood, giving your home a soiled appearance no matter how much you clean. Therefore, it's vital to recognize mold stains and be able to remove them safely.

Why Does Mold Leave Stains?

Unlike dust or dirt, mold is a living organism that attaches itself to materials by putting down roots like a plant and holding on. As one of nature's decomposers, it goes to work breaking down organic matter. While it eats, eliminates waste, and reproduces, it also generates pigment to protect itself. Because mold buries its roots so deeply, this pigment can be challenging to remove even after the fungi itself is gone. BioClean's mold remediation service removes not only household mold and its airborne spores but the stains it leaves behind. Our eco-friendly cleaners are safe for your home, family, and the environment.

How Can You Get Rid of Mold Stains?

  • Wood: If the wood is painted or stained, use a mixture of dishwashing soap and water. Scrub with a soft-bristled brush. If needed, soak the area with vinegar for 1 hour and rewash. If the wood is untreated, you can use a bleach solution of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water.
  • Ceramic tile: Use the bleach solution as above and a stiff brush, especially on grout. A mixture of 75% baking soda and 25% bleach can be used for tough stains.
  • Walls and ceilings: For painted walls and ceilings, mix 2 tablespoons of Borax, 4 cups of white or distilled vinegar, and 2 cups of hot water. Pour into a spray bottle, soak the area, and scrub.

The Importance of Removing Mold Stains

Mold stains aren't dangerous, but they leave unsightly black or brown patches, lower your property value, and give otherwise clean areas a dirty appearance. If allowed to remain too long, fungal pigments can permanently discolor materials to the point where even chemicals can't penetrate deeply enough to remove them
