Attic Mold

Mold in Your Attic Can Lead to Unexpected Damages in Your Home

Toxic Attic Mold is Harmful to Your Health

Did you know that over half of houses have mold in their attics? Most homeowners don’t spend a lot of time in their attic, making it a great place for mold to slowly gain a foothold in your home. BioClean CT can save you thousands of extra dollars in repair costs or even prevent you from being unable to sell your house with our comprehensive mold inspection and remediation services.

Is The Mold in My Attic Toxic?

There are over 100,000 species of mold in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors, making it nearly impossible to determine which type of mold you have without lab testing. You may be aware that black mold can be toxic and affect your health; however, just the color of the mold cannot tell you if it is toxic or not. Toxic mold comes in many colors, and black mold isn't always toxic. No matter the color, all visible mold should be approached the same way.

Importance of Being Proactive About Mold

Leaving mold to its own devices is a dangerous bet for homeowners. In our experience, over 90% of attic mold problems are unnoticed for quite a while, mainly because people do not spend much time up in their attic. It may be discovered during a home inspection or by the homeowner themselves when they head up to get down the holiday decorations. Checking your attic for signs of mold periodically, and having it removed in the earliest stages when it is easier and more affordable, is absolutely the best bet for property owners. At BioClean, once we detect the presence of mold we work hard to utilize effective products like spray foam, which creates an air seal and starves mold of moisture and oxygen, to inhibit future growth and kill what's already there.

Improper Ventilation Is a Leading Cause of Attic Mold

The water vapor in your home must go somewhere, and if it is not ventilated properly outdoors, you may end up with moisture gathering in your attic. One of the most common causes of attic mold is a bathroom fan or dryer vent that runs into the attic. Even with proper ventilation, your air should not be vented directly into an attic. Attic mold can happen in warm or cold weather. Since warm air rises, if it comes into contact with the cold attic sheathing, then condensation occurs. When the weather gets warmer, the moisture is primed to become a mold problem. Effective ventilation systems can be active, meaning they require an electrically powered ventilator, or passive, which let the wind do the ventilating work. Any good home inspector will check the attic ventilation system. To pass inspection and ensure your attic remains cool and dry, make sure you have a proper ventilation system in place.

How to Check Your Attic for Mold

Although your best bet is a proper inspection, there are some telltale signs that your attic has a mold problem. Keep an eye out for these things in your attic, and call for a professional inspection if you notice any:

Dark black staining on wood surfaces. If the wood in your attic shows any black discoloration, then the problem has moved beyond moisture. You have mold that must be removed.

Rusty nails or spots on the attic flooring. The nails in a properly vented attic do not rust, so this can be another indication you have a ventilation problem.

Frost buildup on the underside of the roof sheathing in winter. When it’s cold enough outside, water on the underside of your roof can freeze. This makes it especially easy to spot.

Wet insulation in the attic. This is a sign of a potential mold problem. When insulation gets damp or wet, its ability to insulate becomes significantly diminished.

Smelling mildew in the attic. A musty or moldy smell in the attic means there is a moisture problem lurking somewhere close by.
